Austin Fashion Week (AFW) is in its eighth year and getting bigger and better. The new location at the JW Marriortt, brunch and soirees all over town throughout the week helped AFW pull its largest crowd and even larger names in the fashion industry from Gunnar Deatherage to Sonjia Williams, both Project Runway contestants. The Friday night runway was all talent, sass, and fun! Every designer brought something fresh and creative to the audience. Central Texas’ 15 year old Lauren Nicole is certainly a designer to watch in the Lone Star State. The night was full of fashion stars and style.Three show-stopping designer stole the show with feminine, edgy and versatile styles: Korto Momolu Rare Trends, and Sonjia Williams.
Korto Momolu: Dark Clouds/Silver Linings
Music and fashion go hand in hand and both forms of artistry can inspire one another. Before the first model hit the runway I was drawn in by the trap beat that set the tone for Liberia’s Korto Momolu’s collection. Heads nodded and feet tapped in anticipation and expectation. Each model flaunted the edgy and sexy looks that can easily be incorporated into any wardrobe. Heavy knits and simple black, silver, and white fabrics made this a bold and beautiful collection for the fall season. From beginning to end this collection stood out and left me wanting more. Momolu is a talented designer that is sure to have continued success and worth watching. Korto Momolu, featured as one of the top 5 designers to watch by New York Magazine in 2010. Her collections were also highlighted at New York Fashion Week.
Rare Trends: Effortless Eivissa
Sisters Paola Moore and Marina Silver are the designers behind the innovative fashion line Rare Trends. With a mission to dress contemporary women of the world.
Rare Trends showcased fun fringe and bold leather pieces throughout the collection. Inspired by architecture, movement, and different places they’ve lived, the sisters add an element of adventure to their clothing line. This collection was inspired by the Island of Ibiza. The versatility stood out in this collection and each piece could easily be styled for any contemporary woman.
Sonjia Williams: Street Style Star
Boston’s Sonjia Williams was the show closer and is, no doubt, a designer to watch. When asked whom she was most excited to see, fashion enthusiast Mo M., who had flown in from Boston remarked, “I can’t wait to see Sonjia’s collection.” Williams’ Street Style Star collection was inspired by fearless fashion lovers that express themselves with effortless style. Sonjia wasn’t afraid to show a little skin in the fall/winter season with high slits and midriff tops. William’s was truly the showstopper with the sexy and cool elements for the fearless fashionista.
